Chicago Triathlon, August 27th, 2008
On Sunday, August 27th 2007 Hergen ran the Chicago Triathlon, the worlds largest triathlon with 8500 participants that takes place in Monroe harbor (swimming), Lake Shore Drive (bicycling) and along the lake front past the Shedd Aquarium, the Planetarium, Soldier Field and Mc Cormick Place (running). Read Hergens little report about before, during and after the race. See a 30 second movie of my arrival and find the link to the official race results. There will be pictures following soon.

West Coast Trail 2007 -

Hiking trip to (invisible) bear/cougar/wolf country, (invisible) shipwrecks and visible mudholes

It was January 22nd, 1906, when the Valencia, a passenger ship with 173 people on board got into heavy seas right at the shores of Vancouver Island, somewhere between Pachena Bay and Port Renfrew, along the Juan de Fuca Straight. The ship, 1600 tons and 250 foot long, wrecked in the rocky shores. Ships came to rescue but couldn't help, for they would have gotten shipwrecked as well. 133 lives were lost, only few survived. This incident and many many shipwrecks before the Valencia, resulted in the construction of a trail between Pachena Bay, where a lighthouse was erected in addition, and Port Renfrew. The trail was clearly designed to help stranded survivors of shipwrecks. As time went by and less accidents happened on this stretch of Vancouver Island, the trail got less and less frequented. But in the 1970's the trail transformed slowly into a hiking trail, and today it is called the West Coast Hiking Trail and it is part of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve of Canada.
On July 6th, 2007, three hikers, Lars, Ralf and Hergen set stage to hike this very world famous and difficult West Coast Trail. In fact, the trip had everything. Firstly, it was a fantastic hiking trail, with lots of different characteristics. We hiked along rugged beaches, sandy beaches, on boardwalks through swampy terrain, along cliffs with fantastic views of the Pacific, we climbed hundreds of ladders and ride a couple cable cars, we walked over bridges and suspension bridges. While exploring the terrain, we saw widlife, wildlife and wildlife, except the wildlife that we were expecting to find (and getting tons of warnings of encountering those species, such as bear, cougar and wolf). And we were lucky, because we had best weather. In fact, the last day of our trip onVancouver Island was supposedly the hottest day in history.

Peru 2006 -

or the best place to be for the world cup 2006 - after Germany

The tour journal - day by day

Unforgettable countryside with world-famous Machu Picchu, very friendly and very very polite and very very very soccer-crazy people everywhere, beautiful cities from Arequipa, via Puno to Cuzco, thats what Angeles and Hergen will remember from their Peru trip in 2006. Peru welcomed us June 10th in Lima and we went straight to Arequipa, where we would spend the first couple days, exploring the city, visiting poor little mummy Juanita,  stroll through the small passages of the Monasterio de Santa Catalina and enjoy the various bars and cafes for excellent Peruvian and international food. And of course watch soccer! The soccer crazyness is happening in even the remotest places of Peru, also in Canyon de Colca, where, besides the Canyons that gives this place its name, condors can be found by the dozen and where old white churches, with snowcapped mountains as backdrop would deliver codak moments in almost every village we visited.Off we went to Puno with its famous Sillustani ruins and Lake Titicaca, where floating islands could be walked upon and where a friendly family of Isla Taquile invited us to their homes for lunch. A friendly resident would show us around while choking on Coca leaves and knitting hats, which are status symbols in this community. A 9 hour bus tour from Puno brought us to our final destination and one of the best places in the whole south america: Cuzco and Machu Picchu, that can only be reached train/bus or "per pedes", by hiking the Inka Trail for some 4 days.
