Woke at 7 a.m. and enjoyed a delicious breakfast of nectarines and blueberry bread that AM had purchased from the folks at Want-Not Farm the night before at the bluegrass festival.
We rode to Bath, took pictures of the Bath Iron Works from the bridge over the Kennebec River and rode through some pretty winding forest roads to Wiscasset. Believe it or not, we waited in line for almost an hour and a half at Red's Eats for the #1 lobster roll in Maine. It was worth it.
We biked on toward Damariscotta, where we took a short coffee break at a cafe. AM bought postcards and Jordan befriended Emil, the white-haired bicycle enthusiast. Emil led us to his house, which was on the way to the town of Round Pond, which we had been planning to visit anyway. At his house, his wife Ronna fed us some delicious banana bread and gave us a tour of her jewelry-making studio and store, Peapod Jewelry.
We bid them adieu and rode on to Round Pond, a pretty former fishing village. Then we turned around and headed back up Route 32, a challenging course. For 12 miles we only stopped twice--once for a Larabar and mango fruit strips and once for the Recycle Art shack. The artist, Nathan, builds some amazing creatures out of junk metal and other industrial scraps--frogs, giant lobsters, a rhino, a lion, and a G.W. Bush monkey with a gas nozzle for a... well, you know. He had hundreds of pieces filling the yard.
By this time, we were ready to collapse from fatigue and hunger. Luckily, we only had a few miles to go. We made it to Moody's Diner at sunset, rode up the most challenging hill in the world and checked in to our cabin. Then we walked back down the hill to the diner for dinner. We had roast turkey, roast pork, stuffing, mashed potatoes, biscuits, blueberry pie, and four-berry pie, all for a total of about 10,000 calories.
